The rarest beverage on earth

The Mandailing Province of West Sumatra’s highlands has been hailed as one of the world’s premium coffee growing regions since the Dutch East Indies Trading Company began their plantations during the 17th Century.
The strains of Arabica grown in this region produced such exceptional coffee, that it gave the Dutch a total monopoly on the global coffee trade for over 200 years. Prized throughout Europe, this strong, black, rich, sweet coffee — Kopi Jawa, or Java, was then lost to the world and thought to be extinct due to the dissolution of the Dutch East Indies Trading Company, numerous local political struggles, the Leaf Rust plague of the 1880’s and eventually WWII. The plantations and the coffee trees were literally swallowed and strangled by the jungle.
In 1999, on the highest ridges of Mandailing Estate, a few original rare Typica Cultivar Arabica were discovered. A handful of ancient Arabica trees which had grown to giant proportions over centuries - alive and flourishing in the jungle: thought to be extinct — the last of their kind.
Since their rediscovery, they have been painstakingly replanted and now the legend of Mandailing Estate single origin Arabica Coffee has been reborn.
But this time they have a little friend!
Mandailing Estate is one of the most remote and untouched regions of Sumatra. The rainforest jungle is teeming with life… gibbons, tigers and luwaks. Luwak is the Indonesian word for Civet Cat. It’s a native to the highlands of Java and Sumatra and a relative to the Indian mongoose - famous for its lightning fast reflexes and ability to kill cobras and other snakes.
Pronounced siv-it, the civet is a furry mammal resembling a long (13-38 inches; 33-97centimetres), slender cat, with a more pointed snout, a fluffier tail, and shorter legs.
Lucky for the Civets, the Dutch decided to grow coffee in its backyard, because the civet cats took an instant liking to eating coffee cherries and they are famously finicky, only eating the ripest and most perfect cherry. They are known to investigate an entire coffee bush and eat only one cherry, only bothering to eat the berries that are perfectly ripened, with just the right amount of water content and acidity in the parchment.
When the civet cat digests and processes the cherry, its gastric juices and enzymes change proteins within the bean thereby resulting in the most perfectly processed coffee on earth. A gastric process unique to the civet!
While others have attempted to reproduce this effect with caged civets, Mandailing Estate offers the truest and wildest Kopi Luwak available — The rarest beverage on earth: the most complete single origin available.a

We have provided overview of Sumatra coffee in our latest article. Now let usreview Mandheling coffee or in local language, it is written as Mandailing.
Although Mandheling is least favorite among the Sumatra coffee, it has some afficionados that loves the taste and aroma.





The coffee plantation in Mandheling was started by Dutch in 1700′s and planted in Pakantan highland in the Mandailing Natal region. During the Dutch administration, the Mandheling coffee was considered as one of the famous coffee produced from Dutch East Indie (the name of Indonesia at that time) beside Java coffee.
However, after the Dutch administration no longer managed the coffee plantation, there was a major decline of the coffee production from Mandeling area. Meanwhile the other area from Sumatra has been more famous than Mandheling coffee, they are Lintong and Sidikalang. Later in the beginning of 21st century, Gayo is also known for its good Arabica coffee.
We have discussed the wet-hull processing method which uniquely Indonesian, and no other coffee producers uses the method. The wet-hull or “giling basah” in Indonesian tongue is reducing the acidity and resulting a rich flavor and aroma in the fnal product, however there is a drawback in wet-hull processing which will reduce the quality of coffee.
The wet-hull, if not done carefully will lead to a huge defect in a coffee.
Some will taste mossy and even mushroomy taste that damage the coffee quality. If done consistently, the wet-hull will enhance the flavor of coffee and making it rich in taste and aroma, whether a spicy or earthy taste. However, the Mandheling coffee has not been consistentli producing the same quality coffee for years. Resulting Mandheling coffee as the least desirable coffee among the Sumatra coffee.


It is unfortunate, that a good soil in Pakantan highland in Mandailing Natal that is able to produce a ood quality coffee has missed the chance to consistently producing a good quality coffee just because of inconsistent processing.

Huta Godang

Mandailing, Indonesia is near two important rivers that are known as the Aek Batang Gadis and the Aek Batal Natal. Mandailing covers most of Tapanuli and part of Labuhan Batu, up to the border with Riau and Pasaman in Minangkabau. The Mandailings have two domains. One domain is called Mandailing Godang (lower Mendailing). The second domain is known as Mandailing Julu (upper Mandailing). Godang and Julu are nasution clans of the Mandailing people. Most Mandailing people live in Sumatra Island, where they have a tradition of padi-planting, buffalo herding and gold-mining. Mandailing society and other clans come together through marriage and by love and companionship. Mandailing society, culture and economy are showed through agriculture, reflected in its human-made landscape of Terrace padi fields and irrigation system. The Mandailing Island is a historic place to visit. 1816-1833 was a civil war and a war against the Dutch; the war resulted in devastation to the Mandailing homeland. Mandailing people are creative through the act of art and music. They have a unique style to the beats of buffalo skin drums and they sculpt beautiful things that represent mythological and past rajas.

            I would love to visit Mandailing, Indonesia. The culture of Mandailing is so beautiful and different. They don’t take money as an obligation in their life. The Mandailing people are very loving and accept different people through the act of love and companionship. I feel that is the best way to accept someone into your life. I would enjoy seeing the Aek Batang Gadis and the Aek Batang Natal Rivers that are located near Mandailing because I know those rivers are important. The first place I would go see would be the Mandailing Island where the Mandailings and the Dutch had a war against one another. That is very interesting to me to go see where the battle had happened. It’s weird because I know it brought the Mandailing people much devastation but I would like to stand on the ground where they had great courage and a lot of emotions.

            Another place I would very much enjoy seeing is the traditional habitats known as hutas. They are homes that are located in Manambin far from the main trunk road that cuts through Mandailing today. The homes look very interesting and unique most of the homes are very close together. It is a very scenic highly village with bright greenery, rushing streams and ijok-roofed homes. And the Manambin people plant rice, coffee, and cinnamon in their fields. I would also enjoy visiting a village known as Huta Godang. The historic village had famous people for their great work such as; oldest surviving Sopo Godang and Bagas Godang, Raja Junjungan Lubis the first governor of North Sumtra after Indonesia Independence and last Raja Gadombang who fought against the Dutch. I would like to visit there because of the great historic background.

            I would love to visit Indonesia. Indonesia is such a counter culture place with people who live up to their ethnic traditions. I would very much enjoy seeing how Mandailing people live their life with money as no obligation. I would love to be in a Manambin home and to see the people plant rice and coffee into their village. I would love to visit the Huta Godang because I would be very interested in knowing the history of the village where famous people lived. Last I would like to go to the Mandailing Island where the Mandailing people fought against the Dutch.

A Dutch Ship named 'Kota Nopan' ?

THE NAMED 'KOTA NOPAN'




About a year ago (January 2013), Halak Kotanopan (https://www.facebook.com/halak. kotanopan?fref=ts) and Tagor Lubis (https://www.facebook.com/loebis.tagor?fref=ts), never post a brief word in 'Facebook' (social media) about the existence of a merchant ship named 'Kota Nopan', is owned by the Dutch in the 1930s. Due to the information provided about the existence of a ship (Kota Nopan) is very limited, so that motivates us to look for more information in order to 'riddle' the existence of merchant ships/passenger (Kota Nopan) can be expressed, especially with regard to some of the important things that are considered essential, among others:

First, why the 'merchant ship' Dutch flag was named 'Kota Nopan'? While the Kota Nopan is the 'name' of one of the tribal settlements in the interior Mandailing the west coast of northern Sumatra (Province of North Sumatra), precisely in the area of ​​the district government administrative Mandailing-Natal (MADINA) now.

Secondly, whether the presence of the Dutch-flagged ship was closely associated with periods of colonial Dutch colonial occupation in Kotanopan (Mandailing) in the past?

Third, it was reported that the ship was also carrying trade commodities such as rubber, coffee, and others. However, whether it's commodities trading of plantation crops is a resident of the Kota Nopan (Mandailing Julu)? It is not known with certainty. When commodities trade was indeed derived from Kota Nopan, then in port loaded into the vessel which, whether at Natal or Sibolga as the port closest to the Kota Nopan? In this case, according to various sources that the Dutch colonial power is never applied cultivation ('cultuurstelsel') in Mandailing, one of which is the cultivation of 'coffee' in Pakantan (Mandailing Julu) which are exported to Europe, and when it is one of the commodities trade which is quite well known by the nickname 'Mandheling Coffee'.

Fourth, one of the characters advance education in Mandailing named Willem Iskander (1840-1876) known to have been twice to the Netherlands to study science education (teacher). When it was reported that he had been to Natal to go to Holland. The question: whether Si Sati - is forename Willem Iskander - off to the Netherlands aboard the Kota Nopan ?

And many more other questions relevant to the existence of a ship named the Kota Nopan. The following there are tree (3) pieces of internet sources that are associated with the Kota Nopan ship as 'additional information', namely :

(1). "...... Kota Nopan is a passenger ship/cargo weighing 7323 tons, built in 1931 for Rotterdamsche Lloyd in the Netherlands. Kota Nopan be a typical small passenger ship where his career smoothly until the Second World War. Kota Nopan last trip boat under the Dutch flag which took him from Batavia to New York via the Panama Canal with a cargo of raw materials for the war effort, but he never arrived in the Canal Zone and reported sunk by the German raider. The report was issued on 12 September 1941. The report was half- right, Kota Nopan will not appear, but he did not drown.

On August 17, he departed from the Galapagos Islands when it comes within range of an unidentified ship with a sign Japan. Hatenboer captain ordered the ship to swing and make all speed away from the ship, ship unknown after him, raised the banner of Kriegsmarine and opened fire. The shooter in the City Nopan reply, but the raider was out of reach, the next few shots of looters, nothing is able to hit ships, but it is certainly not able to outrun. Then Hatenboer ordered his ship (Kota Nopan) to stop and surrender.

Comets and Kota Nopan, now a prison ship carrying a crew of 51 people and 42 crew from Australand (captured and sunk August 14) and 144 crew from Devon (captured and sunk August 19) arrived at the prearranged position on September 24. After the stock split and refuel ships, they set off and headed Bordeaux. Kota Nopan arrived at the port on 17 November 1941. The crew were taken to POW camps and the ship was renamed Karin, the next roll is a blockade runner for the Reich.

Then, Kota Nopan (Carin) makes a round trip to Japan and was there with the help of Ultra. The U.S. Navy was looking for blockade runners and robbers when on March 10, 1943 a plane from the USS Santee CVE - 29 is a single ship between Racife, Brazil and Ascension Island, the pilot radioed position and two destroyers, the USS Savannah CL - 42 and USS Eberle DD - 430 broke away from the group and make their task a top speed toward the target. Under the command of Admiral Oliver M. Read, USN , Savannah and Eberle closed at 31 knots and is within range of a warning shot. With two ships , one of which being well armed cruiser, the captain and crew Karin did not have a chance and they know it.

The crew immediately set fee, the boat caught fire and was abandoned . Fourteen of Karin Eberle sent ships to recover what ever they could on paper , while they were on a boat that has exploded resulting in the deaths of nine men, even after that some material was recovered before Carin down, all seventy- two of the men men were taken as prisoners of Karin and placed on the Savannah ship.

Career stopped, the passenger service to the Netherlands, cargo transportation services to help the Allied war effort, the prison ship and cargo transport for the German war effort, which has been captured after nearly snatch back a second time eventually blown up by her crew . ...... ".

- The buildings on the right in the background is of the same style as the building in Flushing . Sources for photos from that period: "Kon Mij De Schelde, Vlissingen 125 jaar Scheepsbouw ... ".

- People on deck HNLMS O13 looks more like Dockers of naval personnel .

So my best guess: Flushing in 1931 (no later than 18 April 1931) with the SS City of Nopan in the background. Ships Cities Nopan itself is also quite famous in World War II, when it was attacked and taken as a prize by the German raider Komet in 1941. Was the name SS SS Passau and then to Carin. Eventually the ship was sunk by a German crew when a U.S. task force intercepted a ship while the attack to break through the Allied blockade.

In May 2005 Willem Cool wrote: ".... This picture was taken 13 O 8 November 1930. This was taken after the launch of this ship with the location in Vlissingen (Flushing) where I found the picture and discription in the book, Ik nader ongezien, de onderzeeboten van de Koninklijke Marine 1906 - 1996 ...".
